Collecting reviews with QR codes

QR codes give your customers a quick way to leave a review without needing an email. Scan the code, land on the review page, done. You can add QR codes to packaging, inserts, receipts, or anywhere your customers might see them after their purchase.

Ali Reviews has two types of QR codes: order QR codes (tied to one specific order) and product QR codes (reusable codes tied to a product SKU).

Order QR codes

An order QR code links directly to the review submission page for one customer's order. Generate it and include it with their package. When they scan it, they land on a pre-filled review page for their exact products.

Generate an order QR code

  1. Go to Collect reviews > Request dashboard > Orders tab.
  2. Find the order you want to add a QR code to.
  3. Click View QR in that row.

The QR code is generated immediately. No confirmation needed.

Download or print an order QR code

After clicking View QR, the QR modal opens. From there you can:

  • Download PNG: saves the QR insert as a PNG file named after the order ID (e.g., 1234.png). Use this for digital includes or to print with your packaging workflow.
  • Print QR: sends the QR directly to your printer.
  • Copy the short link: copies the unique short URL for this order's review page to your clipboard. The URL shown in the modal is the actual link for that order (the format shown here is just an example).

The QR insert shows your current QR template design: heading, body text, scan label, and color. To change the look, click Customize QR design → inside the modal (this takes you to the Appearance tab).

Order QR statuses

Status

What it means

Issued

The QR has been generated. No one has scanned it yet.

Opened

At least one person has scanned and opened the review page.

Review submitted

A review has been submitted via this QR code.

You can see the QR status in the Orders tab row and inside the order detail modal.

Product QR codes

A product QR code is a standing, reusable code for a specific product SKU. Unlike order QR codes, product QR codes aren't tied to a specific customer or order. They're great for printing on product packaging, including in every box you ship, or displaying in a physical location.
Each product can have one product QR code. The code tracks unique opens (counted per IP address). This count never resets.

Generate a product QR code

  1. Go to Collect reviews > Product QR tab.
  2. Find the product you want.
  3. Click View QR.

The QR is generated immediately and the modal opens. The next time you click View QR for the same product, a fresh QR is generated.

From the product QR modal

The product QR modal works the same as the order QR modal:

  • Download PNG: saves the QR insert image.
  • Print QR: sends to printer.
  • Copy the short link: copies the unique short URL for this product's review page. The URL shown in the modal is the actual link for that product (the format shown here is just an example).
  • Unique opens counter: shows how many unique IPs have opened the review page via this QR.

Things to know about product QR codes

  • Each product gets one standing QR code. The URL doesn't change when you click View QR again. A new QR image is generated, but it points to the same link.
  • You can't archive, delete, or reset the unique-opens counter for a product QR code.
  • If you delete the product from Shopify, its QR code is also removed.

Customizing how your QR codes look

Both order and product QR codes use the same QR template. To customize it:

  1. Go to Collect reviews > Appearance > Branding and pages > QR template.
  2. Click Customize.
  3. Adjust the QR color, center image (none, Ali Reviews star, or your logo), heading, body text, and scan label.
  4. Click Save.

Tip: Use a dark color for the QR code itself. Light-colored QR codes can fail to scan in low-light conditions.

If you already have QR codes generated when you save a new template, Ali Reviews will ask whether you want to update existing QR codes to use the new design. Codes you've already printed will still work. The link doesn't change, only the visual.

Reviews submitted via QR code

Reviews submitted through a QR code go into your moderation queue by default. You can review and publish them the same way as any other review. If you'd like QR-submitted reviews to publish automatically, enable auto-publish in your settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can a customer use both an email request and a QR code to leave a review?
The email and QR code are independent channels. If a customer submits a review via QR, the order will show as Reviewed in the dashboard.

What's the difference between an order QR and a product QR?
Order QR codes are for one specific customer's order and link to a pre-filled review page for that person. Product QR codes are reusable and work for anyone who scans them, regardless of whether they've placed an order.

Can I see how many times a QR code has been scanned?
For product QR codes, yes. The unique opens count is shown in the Product QR tab and in the QR modal. For order QR codes, the status changes from Issued to Opened to Review submitted to show engagement.

Do I need to generate a new QR code every time I print packaging?
For product QR codes, no. The same code and URL are reused. Just download the PNG and print as many copies as you need. For order QR codes, you generate one per order.

What happens if I change the QR template after printing codes?
Printed codes still work. The URL doesn't change. The template change only affects new images you download. You can choose to re-render existing generated codes to the new design from inside the app, but you'll need to reprint any physical copies you want to update.
